What Should a PP Chemical Tank Shop-Drawing Review Include Before Fabrication?

Круглый полипропиленовый резервуар в цехе изготовления

A PP chemical tank shop drawing is the shared technical record that turns an RFQ into a buildable fabrication package. Before cutting a panel or preparing a weld, the buyer, fabricator, and installation team should be able to identify the duty, geometry, interfaces, support concept, inspection points, and document responsibilities from the same controlled drawing set.

Start with the boundary. This review is not a substitute for process, structural, civil, or regulatory design approval. It is a practical pre-fabrication control for confirming that the approved project inputs have reached the fabricator without missing interfaces or unresolved assumptions.

It follows the earlier decision work in the PP chemical tank selection guide и Контрольный список для запроса коммерческого предложения на полипропиленовые резервуары. The next question is different: can the released drawing package be built, inspected, transported, and installed as intended?

Identify the exact tank duty on the drawing cover sheet

The controlled drawing turns the PP sheet selection and fabrication decisions into a buildable record. It should therefore cite the test method and result that identify the requested material while leaving structural, process, chemical, and regulatory design approval with the responsible project parties.

Local PP sheet datum Test method Recorded result Drawing use
Плотность ASTM D792-20 912 кг/м³ Material-record reference only
Предел прочности ASTM D638-22 30 МПа Do not use as a completed-tank design load
Модуль упругости при растяжении ASTM D638-22 1820 MPa Material datum to be read with project design basis

The cover sheet should give every reviewer one unambiguous project reference: tag number, service name, installation location, operating and design temperatures, normal and maximum liquid level, intended contents, and the stated design basis or governing project specification. Do not rely on a generic label such as “chemical tank.” A tank for intermittent transfer, continuous process service, or a cleaning solution may have different operating evidence and interface priorities.

Chemical compatibility should be traceable to the actual reagent, concentration, temperature, contact method, and exposure duration. ASTM D543 notes that evaluation conditions need to resemble end-use conditions and that temperature, stress, and exposure factors matter. Record the approved compatibility source or customer specification in the review register instead of treating a material name as a blanket approval.

Freeze the geometry, levels, and reference dimensions

A usable drawing shows overall dimensions, shell and base geometry, top details, access openings, internal items, and every reference datum needed at site. State whether dimensions are internal, external, centreline, or elevation references. Mark the design liquid level separately from overflow, alarm, nozzle, and access elevations where those points are relevant to the project.

Include tolerances only where the project has defined them. If a civil plinth, a steel frame, or adjacent equipment controls an interface, show the required coordinate and allowable adjustment method. A drawing that is visually complete but leaves the datum relationship open can still produce a costly site mismatch.

Review nozzle, piping, and access interfaces as a coordinated set

Each nozzle schedule should identify tag, nominal size, connection type, centreline elevation, orientation, service, and mating requirement. Call out whether the piping contractor supplies a companion flange, gasket, bolts, valve, or support. For entries that depend on field routing, designate them as hold points rather than silently allowing an assumed location.

Nozzle schedules need enough information for the tank and piping teams to review the same interface.
Drawing item Question to close before release
Inlet, outlet, drain, vent, overflow Are size, elevation, orientation, service and mating connection identified?
Manway or inspection opening Is access compatible with cleaning, inspection and nearby clearance?
Level or instrument connection Has the responsible discipline confirmed the instrument type and location?
External supports Are supplied-by and field-adjustment responsibilities clear?

Make the support and reinforcement concept reviewable

The drawing should distinguish the tank fabricator’s scope from the project’s structural and civil scope. Show the intended support arrangement, contact areas, anchoring interfaces if specified, and any project-approved reinforcement details. Do not use a shop drawing to imply a structural calculation that has not been provided or approved. Where panel stiffness or reinforcement is a design concern, link to the approved calculation, drawing revision, or responsible engineer.

For fabrication context, QEEHUA also provides a guide to PP U-shaped channel reinforcement for tank panels. Use it as a conversation starter, then release only the project-specific approved detail.

Panel material and fabrication details should be traceable to the approved drawing revision and material record.

Separate primary containment from secondary containment

A tank drawing should identify the primary vessel boundary, but the project should not assume that it also resolves the secondary-containment arrangement. If a bund, tray, or containment area is part of the scope, document its responsible party, elevations, drainage intent, and any interface with the tank support arrangement.

For regulated U.S. hazardous-waste container-storage situations, 40 CFR 264.175 contains specific containment provisions. Applicability is project- and jurisdiction-specific; the drawing review should therefore identify the governing requirement and the responsible compliance reviewer rather than copying a capacity rule into every tank project. For a product-level choice between containment formats, see PP spill containment pallets.

Define fabrication, inspection, and release records

Use the internal product distinctions to structure the release pack. A sheet-panel cut list, a profile detail, and a welding-consumable requirement should each point back to the same drawing revision and tank tag, while remaining independently identifiable. This is more useful than a broad note such as PP materials approved, because it lets a reviewer see whether each fabrication input agrees with the released design and whether a later substitution or revision has been recorded.

At inspection, close the loop against the drawing rather than against memory. Confirm that panel identification, interfaces, reinforcement details, and the agreed record set all refer to the same released job. If a field adjustment, missing interface, or changed document is found, assign an owner before release. The aim is a controlled fabrication package, not a claim that the drawing has replaced structural, civil, process, or regulatory approval.

The drawing package should state which revision governs fabrication and list the documents that accompany release: approved material identification, weld procedure or project instruction where applicable, visual inspection record, dimensional check, leak-test plan when specified, and packing or handling requirements. This creates a practical handoff from fabrication to buyer inspection.

Keep the record set proportional to the contract and risk. A drawing can point to a separate inspection and test plan rather than overcrowding every fabrication note. For a focused release workflow, use the PP tank weld inspection checklist and the guide to PP welding-rod traceability as linked supporting references.

Material and welding-consumable records belong in the release package, not in an informal email trail.

Release only after changes have an owner

Before fabrication, hold a short review that lists every open item, owner, due date, and drawing revision affected. Close the loop with one issued-for-fabrication revision. If later site conditions change a nozzle, support, or level, route that change through the same drawing-control process instead of relying on verbal instruction.

RFQ handoff checklist: confirmed duty and chemical record; controlled drawing number and revision; dimensions and datums; nozzle schedule; access and support interfaces; containment boundary; material and inspection records; packing, lifting, and site-installation responsibilities.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Does a shop drawing replace engineering approval?

No. A shop drawing communicates the agreed fabrication scope. Structural, process, civil, regulatory, and installation approvals remain with the parties designated in the project documents.

What is the most important item to resolve before PP tank fabrication?

Resolve the duty and all physical interfaces together: chemical service conditions, geometry, nozzles, supports, access, and the drawing revision that authorizes fabrication.

Should secondary containment be shown on the tank shop drawing?

Show the interface and scope boundary when secondary containment affects elevations, supports, drains, or installation. Keep its detailed design and compliance review with the responsible project party.

How Do You Choose Between a Bunded Chemical Storage Container and a Drum Spill Pallet?

A bunded chemical storage container vs drum spill pallet decision starts with what is being stored and how it moves. Choose a container-based system when the project needs a defined storage assembly with its own interfaces and secondary-containment boundary; choose a drum spill pallet when sealed drums must be received, staged, dispensed, or quarantined in manageable zones. Neither option by itself confirms chemical compatibility, containment capacity, or regulatory compliance. Short answer: A drum spill pallet is normally a portable secondary-containment component for drum handling. A bunded chemical storage container is a wider equipment decision involving the primary storage vessel, its surrounding containment, access, drainage, connections, supports, and site interfaces. Select the system that matches the storage format and operating workflow, then confirm the project-specific chemical and compliance requirements. This comparison does not replace the detailed chemical drum spill-pallet buyer checklist or the review needed for a fabricated container. Start by separating primary storage from secondary containment The first question is whether the liquid remains inside drums or needs a dedicated storage assembly. A drum pallet sits below portable containers and collects a spill within the agreed boundary. A bundled container arrangement may include a primary tank or container plus a
